The Friday Door


"I'm just sittin'."  Thomas looked up at his grandfather, dreading the unknown.  He hardly knew the man.
"What are you doing, boy?" had been the old man's original question and was once again repeated.  Courage failed Thomas, who answered the second time with,
"Um." 
"I don't fancy you wasting time here, some neighbor being likely to trip over you.  Go on now, git." The man looked at his grandson a moment more, then closed the door.  With the declaration still ringing sharp in the air, Thomas stared at the door for only a moment before sliding off into the grass, and running down towards the trees by the creek.
